In 1981 Gary and his brother, Jack, founded the Gary Carter Western Art Print Company.  The limited edition lithographs are sold in galleries in nearly every state and several foreign countries.  The print company has been instrumental in providing public exposure to Gary's work, since his original oils are rarely seen in the open market.

    As a western artist, Gary paints a vast array of people, places, times, activities, and events.  Hereford cattle and the men who work them are one of his favorite subjects.  He portrays the Old West in the various "Mountain Man" paintings-powerful men who hunt, explore, and travel in high, lonesome country, filled with unforgettable beauty and sudden, snarling danger.  His "Stalking Horse" series sell out almost immediately after publication, primarily to collectors of this particular group.  Carter's work always tell a dramatic, exciting story-stories that are highlighted by the often humorous, carefully crafted titles.

    Gary and his wife, Marlys, often work together.  They travel extensively, gathering materials for future paints and attending selected art shows.  Marlys has expanded Gary's work to include a very successful line of Graphic Art Titles.  Many of the reproductions in tile have not been released in the limited edition prints.

    Gary Carter's prominence and popularity have flourished in recent years.  However, his friends know him as still very much a private man, unchanged by publicity-still a hot-rodder, fly-fisherman, devoted artist, husband, father, and part-time cowboy.
