"A Royal Flush"
(A Break from Heavy Cover)
Artist's Commentary

During the reservation period and after the buffalo were gone, Indians ranged far and wide for "real meat". Sometimes there wasn't enough of the white man's buffalo (or spotted buffalo) issued at the agency. They were given "passes" and ammunition to hunt when they were fortunate enough to have an honest white agent. Graft was rampant in the reservation system...the native Americans were sometimes short changed when having their issue staples weighed out. The unscrupulous agents pocketed the difference and sold the "surplus" to white merchants.

The buffalo were once considered the Indian's commissary and the tribe's defeat was accelerated by the buffalo's slaughter by white and robe hunters (with Washington, DC blessing). White encroachment also forced a plains animal, the elk, into higher country and this is where Indian and elk have met in this painting.

"A ROYAL FLUSH" is number 15 in THE STALKING HORSE SERIES. This lithograph was produced from an original oil (20"x36") and is limited to 850 signed by the artist and numbered lithographs with 85 artist's proof's and 85 publisher's proof. It is printed on top quality 100% certified archival (300 years) pH neutral number 1 grade paper with an image size of 171/4"x32" and a 2" trim. It has been personally inspected and signed by the artist in pencil. The plates have been destroyed after publication and no further issues will be reproduced.
