"Bear's Paw Rope Corral"
Artist's Commentary

Fall in the Bear's Paw Country of Montana about 1900. Not too many years since the Nez Perce campaign saw an end to major Indian warfare on the Northern Plains. Buffalo were down to a small Yellowstone herd and a band in Alberta. This transitional period attracted numerous cattle and sheep men to the open range of sprawling grassland.

This was the time of the cowboy - before the land was crisscrossed with barbed wire fences. Hence, the rope corral - a portable holding pen to keep the remade within reach of a well aimed loop. The night hawk was responsible for driving in the remuda for mounts, or change of mounts in the afternoon. The horses generally respected these skimpy confines.
