"Five Minute Furlough"
Artist's Commentary

Campaigning during Indian wars was tedious and monotonous. The weather was an enemy and the daily rations of hard tack, salt port and beans were no more than basic subsistence. Buffalo were scarce by the 1880's but there were still scattered bands in Montana.

This painting represents a chance to scratch two itches..."Rank doth have privileges" so these Calvary officers and "non com" are accompanying their Crow scouts in a trailing hunt.

European nobles and Monarchs paid small fortunes to participate in this sport but here in the Army enjoys a special frontier "perk" long before there was a Post Exchange (PX) or a Commissary to buy special treats for the pallet. Meanwhile the rest of the trop awaits just out of sight with visions of a meal that was never listed on the Army master menu...

"FIVE MINUTE FURLOUGH" is limited to 850 signed by the artist and numbered lithographs with 85 artist's proofs and 85 publisher's proofs. It is printed on 100% archival pH neutral paper and only the highest quality, fade resistant inks are used in the reproduction process. Each have been personally inspected by the artist at the time of signature and all production plates have been destroyed after printing.
