"High Card for Kansas City"
Artist Commentary

The cattle drive is over and the cowboys are now deciding on the lucky ones that will take over the train ride to Kansas City. They will board the caboose for the journey and lay back and dream of the adventures they will have in the "big city" and the stories they will tell when they return home from their trip... even though they might exaggerate a little... This has been a tough trip to the shipping point as they all are but the bonus is for you to draw high card and be assured of a reward that can not be given in a monthly paycheck. Pleasures were few in those days and to have an opportunity to see faces and to have new experiences was a once in a life time opportunity.

The railroad saved ranchers and cattle a lot of mileage. No longer was it months in the saddle and mile upon endless mile of dry and dusty trails that seemed to never end. Instead of trailing cattle to major stockyard, the cattle were driven to a local rail head, loaded on stock cars and shipped to a processing center. The old narrow gauge will always be a part of our heritage for the convenience and dependability that is difficult to find in todays environment. There is flavor found in this conveyance that will never be attained in the standard gauge world. Ride one today if you get a chance and enjoy...
