John Colter saw these same wonders in a different light and the Mountain Men that followed him reveled in the benifits they provided in the extreme cold of the long winter months. Snow melted from the ground heat of the of the geysers and provided warmth that no camp fire could ever furnish. The hot water soothed old wounds and aching muscles and available game was easier to come by because man and beast were seeking relisf from the bitter cold and what better spot than one with termal activity.

The background for this painting is one of many wonders of nature found in Yellowstone Park. The area is Midway Geyser Basin and is visited by thousands of tourists each summer. Few of thses visitors would recognize this location i winter as snow blankets the area and covers the trees. However, the thermal activity keeps the ground clear in this area thus provided the Mountain Man Spa" to those that were passing through. The other plus was that the Indians stayed away from this bubbling Hell and the guests were safe in thios "No Mans Land" . In a time when pleasures were few, this had to be "Paradise in Colters Hell".

This lithograph was reproduce from an original oil (24"x40") and is limited to 850 signed and numbered reproductions with 85 artists proofs and 85 publishers proofs. It is printed on top quality 100% archival paper, pH neutral number 1 grade with an image size of 19"x32" and a 2" trim. It has been personally signed and inspected by the artist. The plates have been destroyed after publication.
