BACHELOR'S QUARTERS refers to a "hole" or a park hole where a bull elk can paw down to the cured grasses under the snow...Bulls prefer their own gender to hang out with at this time of the year so it is not unusual to see a bunch banded together.
This trapper has stumbled on to a bachelor's quarters and is using his horse as a "stalking horse" or as a shield to hide his outline. Winter is a particularly tough time for man and animal. Man's survival may hinge on a "plumb center" rifle and a degree from the Rocky Mountain college.
After the peak of the "beaver trade" in 1840, the dedicated mountain man continued to live free and avoid the manifest destiny spreading westward. This trapper is on his own long after beaver trade faded and he looks prosperous.
