The original was commissioned by OUTDOOR LIFE MAGAZINE for a series, "The Great Bear Men" that was published in six parts in 1988.
The WASHBURN GRIZZLY portrays Colonel William D. Pickett and one of his many encounters with grizzly while hunting in the great northwest. Pickett was a native of Alabama and was born in Huntsville an 1827. He served in the Mexican War and fought Comanches in Texas. Later he was in the Civil War and was on the side of the Confederacy and rose to the rank of colonel. He left the south after the war and settled near Cody, Wyoming.
Pickett, some believe, was one of the most skilled grizzly hunters of his day. You must keep in mind that in the late 1800's there were more bears and a lot less people but this did not reduce his proficiency.
This particular hunt occurred on a visit to Yellowstone National Park which in 1877 had few of the comforts found today. First, he had to ride 80 odd miles from Bozeman, Montana to the site in early September. Secondly, the year was rather wild in that Chiefs Joseph and Looking Glass with a large band of Nez Perce were engaged in a running battle with the US Army across Idaho and into the Park. The other factor was that the grizzly had moved to high country to fatten up on pine nuts for the winter hibernation...Now you add an early blizzard that dumped several feet of snow and you have the scene that is set for WASHBURN GRIZZLY. The picture portrays a thousand words as man faces his adversary. The results were Pickett one, Grizzly zero and thus continued the legend of William D. Pickett, grizzly hunter.
