Artist's Commentary

There is a misconception by most that when two bulls meet, there is mortal combat. The truth is quite different...combat, if you can call it that, is usually very gentlemanly...governed by a set of rules that is only recorded in the genes of the Elk. They face each other, lower their muzzles and walk together until their antlers meet. There is a great deal of twisting and maneuvering but no bull seems to want to break away and attack the other's flank or rear...this is not to say that there will not be exceptions to this rule.

The story, generally goes like this...Once the bull's antlers are free of the velvet, summertime companions become less sociable toward one another. Although, it will be many days before they seek out the cows for breeding, the bulls approach and pass each other cautiously, hackles bristling, legs stiffened and heads arched threateningly.

These two bulls had just recently shed their velvet...Squaring off to face each other, the bulls walked together, lowered their heads and engaged the antlers, rattling them back and forth. At times, both bulls seem extremely serious as they grunted, locked their antlers and twisted and shoved back and forth. Many times they broke apart, grazed on nearby grass and then resumed their "combat". Finally, one bull broke away and trotted up a hillside and disappeared into the timber.
