We have a high hunter success ratio here in Montana which makes this state a mecca for local and out of state enthusiasts. We have an excellent group of licensed outfitters who can tailor a camp to personal specifications. The Gallatin area of southwest Montana has one of the largest herds due to the Yellowstone ecosystem. Another factor has been the rather mild winters these past ten years. The winter of 92/93 seems to be one of those "old time" winters residents will recall. In fact the elk are showing up around my stored horse hay even though it requires traversing more than four feet of snow.
I have a special feeling for elk and it's real difficult to watch them "tough it out"...We support the local elk feeding program and actively haul hay for them until the snow melts enough for them to forage again...consequently, it would be difficult for me to shoot one of them when I don't need meat to survive. I do dearly love to go hunting just for the cameraderie...the scenery....the adrenaline rush...the camp...the food...the horses...and it is said that half the fun is just going and getting there...
This particular outfitter is regaling his client with tales of wild success with wild bulls...the horses, meanwhile, have their elk spotted while the humans have missed an early trophy...my favorite ending in a man vs big game never ending story. While few hunters have had trophy success, many more are scouring the back country and getting in great physical condition...
I've had my best experiences, fun and research from hunting with Jim and Gail Walma of Buffalo Horn Outfitters of Gallatin Gateway, Montana...in fact Jim is research...
