Artist's Commentary

"The Six Legged Elk" probably needs a little clarification...When the "Mountain Man" stalked his prey, he would position himself with his horse and move in as close as he dared beside his horse. He would make certain that he was not visible and yet could focus on his selected target. The Elk was unsuspecting of another four legged animal and since their math was limited, would not be aware that this new intruder had six legs instead of the customary four.

This painting is dedicated to the magnificent Elk that comprise the Northern Herd. They have supplied man with essentials to survive over the years and to this day give both visual and hunting enjoyment for thousands of modern day folks that visit the area. This winter was extremely hard on this species and our locals have done an outstanding job of assisting the Elk in surviving the worst by buying and feeding local herds rather than watch them starve. Most of their feed was destroyed by The Yellowstone Park fire of 1988 and the drought that has plagued Montana for the past two years.

Winter is a tough time at it's best with a winter kill that normally takes 10% of the herd. The experts are saying that the number now will hit 30% and they are not going to mess with Mother Nature...Thank God that the people that really love these animals have not taken this position...

This lithograph was reproduced from an original oil (24"x40") and is limited to 850 signed and numbered reproductions with 85 artist's proofs.
