It's only natural that Gary would concentrate on Grizzly Bear paintings...he lives in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and shares their habitat. He has bears wander into his camps and has viewed bears with great care and interest. This painting came about because of his curiosity and the grizzly and the chuck wagon cooks. Who would leave and who would stay?????
"SUDDENLY SHORTHANDED" pits a hungry sow Grizzly with cubs against the owliest chuck wagon cook in the West. The cook is a recurring character named "Skinhead Sally" and the question Gary asked was, "who would come out ahead in a face to face meeting?????" The Grizzly was just trying to add to her fat reserve for hibernation and "Sally" was just trying to poison his crew. The crew "shorthanded" across the river in various stages of trail walking and stampeding while "Sally" has decided that no "Griz" is going to mess up his kitchen and is approaching with a shovel. If he would just wait, "Griz" will probably get into the bean pot where "Sally" stores his dirty socks and decide to leave on her own...
"SUDDENLY SHORTHANDED" joins other Carter Grizzly limited editions such as WHAT TOP KNOT?, ORPHANS? AND TALES OF BEAR STEP.
